We are ending our Character Studies unit with student-led book clubs. It's so important for students to have authentic reading experiences and a chance to apply their skills in a group setting. Students select their books, design their reading assignments, and learn to discuss ideas using evidence from the text. Our book clubs create their own names and rules to make sure their discussions run smoothly!

Our first unit in math class reviews addition and subtraction strategies. Students are asked to think deeply about efficient strategies for solving facts and use multiple representations such as the number line and number rack to show their thinking. Our class has looked at strategies on addition and subtraction tables and noticed patterns. These patterns and relationships have helped us solve more challenging problems such as missing addend problems and generating many different problems with the same sum or difference. We have also learned to write our own story problems.
The most exciting part of the week was applying our strategies and new thinking to several partner games! During these games students record their mathematical thinking in equations and words. Students have fun talking with each other and comparing strategies. The games are a lot of fun! |
About Ms.Voorhees
This is my 9th year teaching third and fourth grade. I joined the St. Timothy's three years ago! I moved from Boston, MA in 2016, so I'm still loving exploring new places in Raleigh. Some of my favorite things are Patriots football, hiking, dancing, and kayaking. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all! Archives
