In third grade, we will continue to teach and reinforce the social skills that students need to be successful both academically and socially. All students must feel safe and a sense of belonging in order to do their best learning throughout the day. An important aspect of building positive relationships is beginning each school day with morning meeting. During this time, we meet together on the rug, greet each other, and have the opportunity to share with one another. We also participate in activities and games that reinforce social skills like cooperation, assertion, empathy, and self-control.
Classroom management in third grade is very proactive, meaning my first priority is getting to know my students well. If their needs are met and they are happy at school, children can manage their behavior very well. Expectations are also reviewed for each activity in the classroom so students know exactly how to behave in a way that allows everyone to learn to their greatest potential, and most importantly, that each student will be comfortable and have fun participating. Students practice routines and procedures that help create a calm, safe, and comfortable daily learning environment. Lessons and activities are planned each day with third graders' unique developmental academic, social and emotional needs in mind. A growth mindset is emphasized to allow students to be comfortable with the learning process and recognize their achievements.
Children naturally make mistakes in the classroom and out on the playground, and part of growing up is learning that actions have logical consequences. I will support students with problem solving with peers and reflection about their choices. I will also help students set and track goals with regards to behavior or friendship. Every day is a new chance for them to grow and learn about themselves emotionally and socially. I expect students to work hard, be brave in the learning process and be kind every day. I will let each child know that I care about them and that I believe in them every day.
